A launch ceremony was held today (29 October) at the OUHK campus. Officiating at the ceremony included the Convenor of the Sub-committee on Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) under the Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund Mr Herbert Hui Ho-ming, Principal Assistant Secretary (Further Education) Ms Pecvin Yong Pui-wan, OUHK President Prof. John C Y Leong, Caritas Institute of Higher Education President Prof. Reggie C P Kwan, Chu Hai College of Higher Education President Prof. C N Chang, Hong Kong Shue Yan University Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance) Mr Aman Shah, and Tung Wah College President Prof. Thomas K S Wong.

Convenor of the Sub-committee on QESS Mr Herburt Hui said through enhancing the library system of the collaborating institutions, the scheme has helped facilitate the sharing of resources, strengthened the search of library collection and improved information management among them. With the five participating institutes each having its own background and characteristic, the scheme will further promote the cooperation among the self-financing institutions in the future, thus enhancing a healthy and sustainable development of the sector as a whole.

The QESS has approved a grant of more than $50 million to support the implementation of the project. The five participating institutions will collaborate to develop an online collection sharing and information discovery system which is embedded with the next generation searching and discovery tool. The new system will facilitate faculty members and students to find and access library and eBook collection among the five libraries through a one-stop search interface. To further enrich the libraries’ digital content for sharing among the institutions and to achieve better cost effectiveness, e-books will also be acquired collaboratively by the five libraries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Leong of the OUHK said the project would help rectify the shortage of resources faced by the libraries of self-financing institutions. Students would be able to enjoy an improved quality library service and study environment. The enhancement of libraries’ content could also help promote reading.

Prof. Leong thanked the Education Bureau and the Sub-committee members on QESS for generously supporting the project. He hoped that more institutions would join the project in the future. He looks forward to having more co-operations among the self-financing institutions so as to boost the sustainable development of the post-secondary education in Hong Kong.
