Short description
 
This is a four-year programme that leads to the award of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Laboratory Science.  The first year is devoted to foundation scientific training (e.g. Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry) and other General Education courses (e.g. English and Statistics).  The remaining years will be devoted to major subspecialty training in Medical Laboratory practice: Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology & Transfusion Science, Anatomical Pathology, and Medical Microbiology & Virology).  The training includes a clinical practicum in public/private medical laboratories.  There will also be a final year research project.  Graduates are eligible for registration as a Medical Laboratory Technologist “醫務化驗師” (Part II).  This statutory registration is a prerequisite for employment in local public and private health services.

Requirement remark
  • Applicants with previous HKDSE subject result of A040 ‘Liberal Studies’ will be used as the alternative of the core subject requirement of A045 ‘Citizenship and Social Development’.
  • The programme aims to provide students with training and knowledge for equipping them to be an efficient and effective healthcare worker.  Applicants are expected to possess substantial knowledge in chemical and biological sciences to HKDSE level in order to benefit from learning.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained:
    • Level 4 or above in English Language in HKDSE
    • Level 4 or above for Chemistry or Combined Science with Chemistry* in HKDSE
  • Applicants should have normal colour vision, as this is usually required for employment in local medical laboratories.
  • Applicants should be prepared to handle human samples, tissues and body fluids.
  • Students with HKDSE English Language results at Level 3 are required to complete non-credit bearing English enhancement course(s) in the first year of study.

The College will adjust the tuition fee of its programmes based on the Composite Consumer Price Index to be announced by the Government annually.
The above tuition fee is net of annual subsidy under the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP).  In 2024/25 academic year, the annual subsidy under the SSSDP is $79,770 for laboratory-based undergraduate programmes.  The annual subsidy amount may vary in each academic year subject to the announcement by the Education Bureau.  For details, please visit http://www.cspe.edu.hk/sssdp.  Only local students are eligible to be subsidised under SSSDP.
