Tung Wah College Welcomes over 900 New Students at Inauguration Ceremony
03/09/2021

Tung Wah College (TWC) held an Inauguration Ceremony on 3 September to welcome the new students.  The ceremony was officiated by the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. Kazaf TAM Chun-kwok. The applications to TWC this year were enthusiastic, with over 3,600 direct applications and 16,000 JUPAS applications. As of 6 September, the number of admissions is higher than expected with 909 new students admitted to various full-time degree and sub-degree programmes offered by the School of Nursing, School of Medical and Health Sciences, School of Management and School of Arts and Humanities. Though the number of HKDSE candidates in 2021 marked a record low for the past decade, TWC continues to be recognised by students and parents given a slight increase in the number of students admitted when compared with the corresponding figure last year.

Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. Kazaf TAM Chun-kwok extended a warm welcome to the new students at the Ceremony. Having witnessed the College’s success in acquiring its first Programme Area Accreditation Status for the programme area of Occupational Therapy at QF Level 5 while celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, Mr. Tam is truly proud of all these significant and remarkable achievements, which are vital to the rapid growth of the College over the past ten years. In his inaugural address, he said, “Despite the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic outbreak, TWC never stops striving for excellence by expanding its curricular offerings and professional standing. From offering two programmes with around 300 students only to now running 18 programmes with over 3,000 students, the growth of TWC in ten years is definitely a remarkable one. To date, over 3,500 graduates have been trained up to join the workforce and are making valuable contributions to our society through their respective professions. Many of them who are working in healthcare related industries have even been joining the force against COVID-19 at the frontline. Their selfless spirit, shared with Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, is highly appreciated beyond doubts.”

Prof. Sally Chan, President of TWC, said at the Ceremony that tertiary education is not limited to classroom learning, examination and placement. She invited students to set their goals, explore new possibilities, establish self-identity, meet people with different backgrounds and make life-long friends during this golden period of their lives, embarking their learning journey with an open-minded attitude. Sharing her personal experience, Prof. Chan encouraged the new students to dream big for greater future achievement and remarked, “I did not have a better starting point than you all. I started my learning journey with a certificate level study and became a registered nurse to serve in the healthcare sector. Later, I went to Australia and the United Kingdom to complete my degree in higher education, and subsequently my master and doctoral degrees. After that, I served as a University Professor, Dean, Pro Vice-Chancellor and then came back to Hong Kong earlier this year to be appointed as the President of TWC. With the concerted support from the College, I believe that our students will be able to attain their fullest potential and realise their visionary dreams and goals.”

At the Ceremony, two new students were invited to share their reasons of choosing TWC. Matthew CHAN Tsz Ho, the student representative from the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Radiation Therapy, said that seeing countless healthcare professionals working restlessly in the pandemic has motivated him to join the sector. He was determined to study Radiation Therapy after knowing the cancer death of his friend’s loved one and hope that he could bring hope to patients. Moreover, Matthew regarded TWC’s collaboration with many sectors to provide internship and voluntary work opportunities to students as one of the reasons why he chose to study at TWC. Another student representative, Rex KEUNG Po Chuen, who is admitted as a student of the Higher Diploma in Nursing, will articulate to a bachelor degree programme in nursing after the completion of his programme, in order to become a registered nurse. He hopes to spread love to patients and serve them with professional knowledge and skills.
