Message from the Chairman of College Council Mrs. Viola Chan Man Yee-wai, BBS TheChairmanof CollegeCouncil 06 Building on the acknowledged strengths and expertise of TWGHs in medical and health, education and social services, TungWah College (TWC) has reached another milestone of success in 2017/2018. Subsequent to the o ering of allied health professional degree programmes in medical laboratory science, radiation therapy and occupation therapy in recent years, TWC continues to commit itself to developing healthcare degree programmes. In June 2018, TWC was approved by the Chief Executive-in-Council to launch physiotherapy degree programme from 2018/2019, making TWC the first self-financing institution to o er such programme. The report of the Strategic Review on Healthcare Manpower Planning and Professional Development released by the Food and Health Bureau in 2017 indicated that Hong Kong is experiencing a serious shortage of physiotherapists. In addition to launching physiotherapy programme to alleviate manpower shortage, TWC has spent over 10 million dollars on setting up specialised laboratories and purchasing equipment for the new programme. Besides, the subsidised places of our nursing programme under the Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP) will increase from200 in 2015/2016 to 350 in 2019/2020. In addition, TWC is establishing a new Kwai Hing Campus to cater for the development of the nursing programmes. Conveniently located at Kowloon Commerce Centre, the new campus is expected to open in September 2019. TWC is developing rapidly in di erent aspects. Along with the Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Early Childhood Education programme launched in 2017/2018, TWC currently o ers 17 programmes, and is actively preparing a newprogramme on social and business management. The programme will create another unique niche for the College and aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills for careers in non-profit organisations, charities, social enterprises, government departments as well as business entities with social purposes in addition to pure economic profits. At present, TWC has a student population of 2,400 and has nurtured over 2,000 graduates. TWC will continue to improve campus environment and facilities for enhancing teaching and learning quality, and will strive to establishing a permanent campus in the long term. As the founding Chairman of the Board of Governors and the Chairman of College Council, I have been greatly impressed by the team spirit that makes us become a renowned self-financing healthcare education institution in a few years. We are also determined to leverage our unique strengths to develop new programme areas in early childhood education, and social and business sustainability. The concerted e orts of colleagues allowed us to attain a steady student population growth despite the decrease in the number of secondary school leavers. I sincerely hope that all members of the College will continue to work as one to develop TWC into a leading private university.
