In his speech, Mr. Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, JP, Secretary for Education, the Guest of Honour of the Ceremony, thanked TWGHs and TWC for their efforts and contributions to local talents and higher education development. He said, “I am pleased to see TWC’s commitment to providing tertiary education leveraging on TWGHs’ mission and expertise. The College’s dedication in the development of allied health professional programmes with unique features has gained wide recognition from different sectors of the society. I hope that the College will continue to make good use of its strength in offering diverse and quality programmes for nurturing talents that can meet the healthcare needs of our community. I wish the College another fruitful decade ahead.”
Mr. Tam Chun-kwok, Chairman of Board of Governors, expressed in his welcome speech heartfelt gratitude to all guests for their support to TWC. It was really not easy for attendees to gather for the celebration of TWC’s 10th Anniversary during the pandemic. Mr. Tam said that, having established for only ten years, TWC has already built solid foundation for growth and become one of the key members in the local self-financing higher education sector. It could not be achieved without the unwavering support from TWGHs, the current and former members of Board of Governors and the College Council of TWC, as well as partnering organisations. Mr. Tam has also highlighted the tremendous pressure faced by the healthcare system last year, knowing that TWC graduates are fighting at the frontline with the disease and displaying TWGHs’ selfless caring spirit constantly. He feels so proud of their professional devotion and hope that TWC will nurture more talents, so that they can continue to make contribution to the society.
Mrs. Viola Chan Man Yee-wai, BBS, Chairman of College Council, said, “TWC offered only two programmes and had 300 odd students at its founding stage. Having grown over the first decade, the College is currently running 16 programmes with a student population of more than 3,000. The College has already trained up over 3,300 graduates. The average of their starting salary is the highest among local self-financing post-secondary institutions and it is even higher than that of some UGC-funded universities, showing that graduates of TWC are highly competitive in the job market. The theme of TWC’s 10th Anniversary is “Thrive with Knowledge • Serve with Heart”. TWC not only motivates learning and encourages the pursuit of academic knowledge, but also commits to the advancement of applied research in various disciplines, hoping to strive for excellence in both teaching and learning. While we aim high at enriching students’ lives with scholarly education, we make our best endeavours to nurture talents with commitment to serving the society with a caring heart, enabling them to overcome challenges in an ever-changing world and advance the development of our society.”
Professor Sally Chan, President of TWC has full confidence in the future development of the College. She aspires to lead TWC to become a private university with both local standing and global exposure. Leveraging on the foundation built over the last decade, TWC will move with the times to offer quality programmes with professional standards, in order to accommodate the needs of the society. In addition, Professor Sally Chan extended sincere thanks to the Government of HKSAR, academic fellows, donors and partnering organisations, for their staunch support, as well as contributions made by the current and the former members of TWGHs Board of Directors and Advisory Board, TWC’s Board of Governors and the College Council, the former Presidents, the academic and administrative staff, alumni and students. Her remark was concluded by fireworks display to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of TWC and exhibit her determination to join hands with the College for embracing a brighter future.
The tremendous accomplishment the College made in ten years owes much to the concerted efforts and diligence of every member of the College. At this historic moment, TWC presented Long Service Awards to 14 teaching and administrative staff members who have served 10 years at the College and souvenirs to 5 members of the Board of Governors and the College Council who have served 10 years at the College, in recognition of their dedicated services and lasting contributions since the College’s establishment. Other highlights of the event included playing of the music video “Our times at TWC” produced by the 2nd Music Society of Tung Wah College Students’ Union.
Looking ahead, the College is now devising the next 5-year Strategic Plan(2021/2022 – 2025/2026)to identify key strategies and directions that the College would work on to achieve the goal to become a private university. Entering the second decade, TWC will uphold its mission of nurturing talents for the society and work hand in hand with all sectors for reaching greater heights in the coming ten years.
