Competitive Research Funding Schemes

for the Local Self-financing Degree Sector 2024/2025

(Internal Deadline: 12 December 2023)

We are pleased to inform you that the funding schemes under the Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Local Self-financing Degree Sector (SF) are now open for application. We are writing to invite your application to the following Competitive Research Funding Schemes:

(I) Individual Basis

The main objective of the FDS is to develop the research capability of individual academics in the local self-financing degree-awarding institutions so that they can transfer their research experiences and new knowledge into teaching and learning. Applicants are encouraged to involve undergraduate students in the research projects and to apply for the related allowance. In addition, applicants may include a budget for teaching relief in the application, if necessary, to engage replacement teachers.

Inter-Institutional Development Scheme (IIDS) https://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/funding_opport/iids/index.html
The main objective of the IIDS is to enhance academics' research capability in the local self-financing degree-awarding institutions and keep them abreast of new developments and challenging research topics in relevant fields. Applicants are advised to articulate in the applications how the proposed workshops or seminars can enhance the academics' research capacity.

Institutional Development Scheme (IDS) –Collaborative Research Grant https://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/funding_opport/ids_crg/index.html
The main objective of the IDS Collaborative Research· Grant is to encourage and support collaborative research involving two or more local self-financing degree-awarding institutions, and / or group research activities that operate across disciplines within an institution with a view to enhancing the research output of self-financing institutions in terms of the level of attainment, quality, dimensions and / or speed. RGC looks for evidence of genuine collaboration, as opposed to a combination of individual research proposals.

(II) Institutional Basis

Institutional Development Scheme (IDS) – Research Infrastructure Grant https://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/funding_opport/ids_rig/index.html
The IDS Research Infrastructure Grant proposal should be in line with the institution's strategic areas. Applicant should articulate in the application how the proposed infrastructure build-up or programme of activities can lead to the enhancement of research capacity, how the capacity enhancement can be measured and what research areas are expected to be generated from the project. Each institution is allowed to submit one application under the IDS Research Infrastructure Grant in each exercise.

The Call Circular, forms and guidelines can be downloaded from the RGC website (under “Application Procedures”) at https://www.ugc.edu.hk/eng/rgc/funding_opport/sf.html.
Please pay attention to the Guidance Notes on the Particulars/ Eligibility Criteria of PI.
