Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Is the programme subsidised by the government?  
A1: Yes, The HD(N)(SWD) programme is fully subsidised by Social Welfare Department (SWD). Each student will obtain full reimbursement of the tuition fees for the first normative 2-year study period of the programme upon satisfactory completion of the training and subsequent employment as an Enrolled Nurse (General) in the welfare sector for a continuous period of not less than three years.
 
Q2: Will there be any supervision in all clinical practicums?
A2: Yes. Students will receive close supervision throughout all clinical practicums. During the practicums, supervision will be provided by academic staff or experienced clinical mentors, enabling students to acquire hands-on skills and apply theoretical knowledge in real clinical environments, ensuring students gain practical insights and professional competence under expert supervision.
 
Q3: Do I need to work shifts like other nurses in the hospitals?
A3: Yes. According to the requirements of the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, students must complete no fewer than 1,600 hours of clinical and community practice over the two-year training period. This includes at least 100 hours of night duty. Students are expected to work on a rotating shift basis - am, pm, and night – according to the training arrangements.
 
Q4: What are the career prospects after I have completed the Programme?
A4:
  • Graduates will be eligible to apply for the professional license of Enrolled Nurse (General), as recognized by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong.
  • Upon successful graduation, graduates can be employed as an Enrolled Nurse (General) in a variety of settings, including clinical units, community services, and residential care homes.
  • Graduates of the Higher Diploma in Nursing Programme (SWD) programme are required to undertake employment as Enrolled Nurse (General) in the welfare sector for a continuous period of not less than three years following successful completion of the training.
 
Q5: After I have completed this Programme, is there any opportunities to further my studies?
A5: After you have completed the HD(N) programme, you are required to undertake employment as an Enrolled Nurse (General) in the welfare sector for a continuous period of not less than three years. Upon fulfilling the terms of the Undertaking, you may consider pursuing your further study in the Bachelor of Health Science (Hons) in Nursing (senior year entry) for the RN license at our College.
