Tung Wah College Faculty and Students Embark on Healthcare Study Tour in Huizhou to Explore GBA Medical Industry Development
02/08/2025

To strengthen Guangdong-Hong Kong collaboration in healthcare and education while enhancing students’ understanding of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) medical industry, the faculty members and students of School of Medical and Health Sciences attended a four-day professional study tour to Huizhou from August 2 to 5. The itinerary focused on healthcare systems and health technology, featuring visits to medical institutions, vocational colleges, and health industry bases to deepen participants’ knowledge of the GBA’s healthcare operational models, current developments, and future trends.

Day 1 (August 2)

The delegation assembled at Yew Chung International School in Kowloon Tong in the morning, traveling to Huizhou. The first stop was the century-old "Hoi Tin Tong" to study Lingnan’s traditional herbal culture, particularly the medicinal value and traditional craftsmanship of turtle jelly and explore its application and preservation in modern health products.

In the afternoon, the team visited King's Luck Healthy Food Co., Ltd. to observe R&D processes, production lines, and quality control systems for health foods. Participants learned about practical implementations of the food-as-medicine concept in the health industry and witnessed automated production operations.

Day 2 (August 3)

In the morning, the delegation visited the Hakka Granny Scenic Area for an immersive experience in traditional Hakka tofu-making techniques. Participants observed the entire process—from ingredient selection, soaking, and grinding to molding—gaining insight into the health-preserving wisdom embedded in local culinary culture.

During the afternoon, the group explored Luofu Mountain Scenic Area. Amidst natural landscapes, they toured the Ge Hong Museum to learn about the accomplishments and contributions of this renowned Eastern Jin Dynasty medical scientist and alchemist in areas such as alchemy, traditional Chinese medicine theory, and clinical practice. Subsequently, the team visited the Dongjiang Column Memorial Museum, where they studied the heroic efforts of medical personnel during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. Through stories of treating the wounded and safeguarding public health under challenging conditions, participants deepened their understanding of healthcare professionals’ responsibilities and mission.

Day 3 (August 4)

In the morning, the study tour delegation visited Huizhou Third People’s Hospital. Guided by hospital administrators and medical staff, participants toured the outpatient department, in-patient wards, and specialized clinics. They gained in-depth insights into the operational model, disciplinary structure, and clinical management workflows of a large-scale comprehensive hospital, while also engaging in discussions on clinical internships and research collaboration. Prof. Tang Fuk Hay and Dr. Huang Mohan delivered specialized presentations on radiotherapy within their respective research fields. Their presentations effectively combined theoretical depth with clinical applicability, fostering deeper insights among attendees into frontier radiotherapy technologies.

During the afternoon, the team proceeded to Huizhou Health Vocational College. They attended practical training sessions for nursing majors, gained hands-on experience in fundamental nursing procedures, and observed demonstrations of Traditional Chinese Medicine rehabilitation techniques and smart healthcare devices. This provided firsthand exposure to the curriculum design and teaching methodologies characteristic of vocational education in mainland China.

Day 4 (August 5)

In the afternoon, the study tour delegation visited Unilumin Technology, a national high-tech enterprise, where corporate representatives introduced the latest R&D achievements and practical applications of LED display systems in healthcare. These included innovative scenarios such as operating theater visualization, remote medical consultation, and clinical training. Students not only observed cutting-edge hardware through interactive demonstrations but also gained insights into technology’s critical role in enhancing surgical precision and optimizing medical resource sharing.
