TWC Professor Lorna Suen and Professor Simon Lam Inducted as Fellows of American Academy of Nursing (FAAN)

The American Academy of Nursing (Academy) announced the 2022 Class of New Fellows earlier, there are 4 inductees from Hong Kong this year. Professor Lorna Suen and Professor Simon Lam of the School of Nursing, Tung Wah College (TWC), have been inducted into the 2022 Class of Fellows of the Academy for their outstanding contributions to healthcare education and research, locally and globally.

Professor Sally Chan, President of TWC extended her warmest congratulations to the two Professors. “Induction into the Fellowship is one of the highest international distinctions in the field of nursing. With two more scholars being inducted into the Fellowship, it is a global recognition of the quality of teaching, research and education provided by TWC’s outstanding scholars,” she said. TWC currently has 3 scholars inducted into the Fellowship, including Professor Sally Chan, who has been selected as a Fellow since 2013.  The inductees will be recognised at the Academy’s annual Health Policy Conference to be taken place on 27-29 October 2022 in Washington, D.C., USA.

Professor Lorna Suen is currently the Dean of the School of Nursing at TWC. She has over 20 years of teaching experience in tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. Before joining TWC, she was the Director of the Squina International Centre for Infection Control and Associate Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Suen’s research interests include complementary and alternative medicine (mainly auriculotherapy and auricular diagnosis), and infection control. Her research findings have also had significant societal impacts.

Professor Suen has published 150 academic articles in international refereed journals, and serves as editorial board member of different international refereed journals, such as the American Journal of Infection Control and Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Professor Suen obtained the Fellow in Research and Education (FHKAN) from Hong Kong Academy of Nursing in 2013, and was named on Stanford University 's List of the World Top 2% most-cited scientists 2020. She is frequently invited by different universities and conferences (local, national, and international) as the keynote speaker, plenary speaker, moderator or guest speaker. She has also served as a Convenor of the East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars (EAFONS) formed by seven countries, which aims to strengthen and promote high-quality doctoral education for nurses.

Professor Simon Lam is currently the Associate Dean (Research) of the School of Nursing and Centre Director of Integrative Health Centre at TWC. He has over 15 years of teaching experience in higher education in Hong Kong. He also serves as associate editorial roles for various professional journals including BMC Infectious Diseases, Frontiers in Public Health, Frontiers in Medicine, etc. Professor Lam has published over 90 refereed articles and book chapters in the field of infection control, psychometric testing and public health. He developed the Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale (CSPS) for measuring compliance with infection control practice among nursing in clinical settings. This scale has been translated into more than ten languages and is adopted for use in over 26 countries.

Professor Lam obtained the Fellow in Research and Education (FHKAN) from Hong Kong Academy of Nursing in 2019, nominated as 2021 Emerging Nurse Researcher/Scholar Award for the Asia Region from the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) as well as recognised by Stanford University’s List of the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2020.
