The long-awaited Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon took place on 21 January 2024. TWC sent a team of 19 Physiotherapy teachers and students, together with 30 physiotherapists, to provide free on-site physiotherapy services, helping runners to manage their on-site and post-race recovery issues!
This year, more than 74,000 participants joined the race. It is the first time for the Physiotherapy team at TWC to be invited to participate in this prestigious sports event in Hong Kong. Dr. Nicola Mok, Assistant Professor of physiotherapy at TWC said, “We were a bit anxious as the weather forecast predicted wet and cold conditions in the morning, which could increase the risk of injury. However, we were fortunate that the sky cleared up and the temperature turned out to be ideal for running on the day. We were ready by around 5am, and from then on, we provided non-stop physiotherapy service until 2pm. A total of 445 runners visited the physiotherapy station, with nearly 1,000 treatments provided in total. Under the supervision of experienced physiotherapists, our students assisted in treatments such as massage and stretching for the runners. They all expressed that this was a unique opportunity that allowed them to apply their knowledge while also gaining valuable service experience in sports therapy.”
The team expressed their pride in being the official partner of the event and look forward to participating again next year.
