Tung Wah College (TWC) held a spring media reception today (17 February). Professor Sally Chan, the President, shared the College’s latest development and announced the employment situation of its 2024 graduates to the media.
Average Monthly Income Increased by over 10%
Over 85% of TWC Graduates Earn over HK$30,000 Monthly
TWC conducted the 2024 graduate survey on graduates’ employment situation from October to December last year. A total of 669 graduates responded to the survey, at a rate of almost 88%. According to the data collected, 78% of graduates secured jobs and 8.8% of graduates opted for continuing studies upon graduation. The salary figures of the 2024 graduates recorded steady growth. Graduates' overall average monthly salary reached HK$33,869 in 2024, marking a record high with an increase of 11% compared with the corresponding figure in 2023. The median monthly income is HK$34,924, a slight increase of 2.4% from 2023. About 85% of graduates earned a monthly salary exceeding HK$30,000, with nearly 50% of them earning over HK$35,000 monthly. These figures underscore the competitiveness of TWC graduates in the job market and their strong reputation among employers.
In 2024, among all degree programmes, graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Radiation Therapy reported the highest average monthly salary of over HK$37,500. For sub-degree programmes, graduates of the Higher Diploma in Nursing reported the highest average monthly salary of over HK$25,900. Regarding job nature, nearly 90% of graduates joined the medical and health services sector, with the highest average monthly salary, followed by community and social services at about 4%, and education at 3%. Notably, the average monthly salary of graduates working in the civil service, education, and community and social services sectors experienced a significant increase ranging from 12% to 20% compared to the previous year, reaching the highest levels in recent years.
Professor Chan said, “The employment situation of TWC’s 2024 graduates is promising, marked by a significant increase in the overall average monthly salary, compared with the 0.4% increase in the previous year. We are also pleased to see a significant salary increase among graduates who entered non-healthcare industries. It reflects the College’s emphasis on practical application in its programme, equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed for the future job market.
According to the latest Healthcare Manpower Projection from the Hospital Authority, there will still be a shortage of 8,700 general nurses by 2030, indicating a growing demand for healthcare professionals. The College has actively cooperated with the government in recent years to promote primary healthcare development. We arrange for students from different programmes to complete a certain proportion of clinical placement in primary healthcare and community settings, including elderly care homes, district health centres, and the TWC’s Integrative Health Centre. We aim to train professionals who can deliver primary healthcare, thereby alleviating the pressure on the public healthcare system in the long run.”
Encouraging Progress in Attaining University Title
Application for University of Applied Sciences in Parallel
TWC is applying for a university title with promising progress in accordance with the government’s “Roadmap for Becoming a Private University”. The College successfully obtained the second Programme Area Accreditation (PAA) for the Programme Area of Biological Sciences in August last year, as well as successfully completed the third PAA in January this year. Professor Chan expressed optimism and confidence about the accreditation results. The College plans to commission the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) to conduct combined institutional reviews for becoming a private university and University of Applied Sciences (UAS) within this year. We expect to apply for the university title and UAS status in a parallel track through the Education Bureau to the Chief Executive-in-Council in the 2025/2026 academic year.
The College has become an associate member of the “Alliance of Universities of Applied Sciences”. The College aims to promote the development of UAS to jointly cultivate diversified skilled talents and support Hong Kong in becoming an international hub for post-secondary education. Professor Chan highlighted that the College has actively established partnerships with local and Greater Bay Area enterprises in recent years, providing students with more internships and learning opportunities to enhance their applied skills. She pointed out that through establishing the UAS brand, the College is confident that the public can recognise the characteristics and advantages of applied degree programmes, including abundant internship opportunities, a close industry network, and clear career prospects, thereby reshaping traditional perceptions of Vocational and Professional Education and Training within society.
Commencement of 15th Anniversary Celebration
Sharing Achievements with the Community
In 2025, TWC is celebrating its 15th anniversary with the theme “Leap into Dreams • Co-create a New Journey”, which symbolises the College’s significant stride in development. This theme reaffirms TWC’s core values and missions to help young people unleash their full potential and dare to dream, and work hand in hand with the community to create new milestones for Hong Kong’s development.
Professor Chan remarked, “Over the past 15 years, with unwavering support from various sectors of society, TWC has established a clear niche in the self-financing tertiary sector, particularly a unique advantage in healthcare education, achieving remarkable results. Looking ahead to the coming year, I hope the College will achieve breakthroughs and develop into a private university that takes root in Hong Kong, serves our country, and opens to the world.”
The College will host a series of anniversary events throughout the year to connect with various sectors and share its growth journey over the past 15 years. These upcoming events include visiting scholar seminars, Health Day, the International Conference on Positive Psychology, the Alumni Homecoming Dinner, international academic conferences, the 15th Anniversary Gala Dinner, and the publication of an Anniversary Commemorative Booklet. The College cordially invites all community members to support and share the joy of the anniversary together.
