189 Students Received Scholarships Totaling HK$4.16 million at Tung Wah College Scholarship and Award Presentation Ceremony 2023

Tung Wah College (TWC) held the “Scholarship and Award Presentation Ceremony 2023” at King’s Park Campus on 27 June 2023 to recognise students’ outstanding performance in academic areas, sports and extra-curricular activities. 242 scholarships amounted to HK$4.16 million were awarded to more than 189 students. Mr. Wai Ho Man, Herman, Chairman of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) Board of Directors 2023/2024 cum Chairman of Board of Governors of TWC; Mr. Tseng Hing Yip, York, Chairman of College Council of TWC, Members of TWGHs Board of Directors 2023/2024; Professor Sally Chan, President of TWC; donors and other guests attended the Ceremony to witness the outstanding achievements of the awardees.

Mr Wai Ho Man, Herman, Chairman of Board of Governors, said in his speech, “For more than 100 years, TWGHs strives to promote education and to nurture the youngsters through the provision of quality education services for the community. For tertiary education, we established TWC, a degree-awarding self-financing tertiary institution. Its unique curriculum with emphasis on practical application and innovation is designed to cultivate students' problem-solving abilities.” He also expressed special thanks to the generous support of scholarship donors, who provide valuable learning opportunities for students year after year. Scholarships not only recognise students' hard work but also motivate them to continue pursuing excellence.

Mr. Tseng Hing Yip, York, Chairman of College Council, mentioned in his speech that TWC received a grant of HK$26.5 million from the Education Bureau to launch the first self-financing Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Imaging in Hong Kong in the 2024/2025 academic year, marking another breakthrough for the College in the medical and healthcare field. He mentioned that TWC has competitive advantages in nursing and allied health disciplines to uphold the mission of nurturing healthcare talents. TWC is proactively developing other professional disciplines and has set a clear objective to meet the requirements of becoming a university.

In her vote of thanks, Professor Sally Chan, President of TWC, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the SAR Government, TWGHs, and donors from various sectors of the community for their staunch support to the College. She mentioned that TWC expects to apply for university title in 2025. The College has demonstrated its ability to meet the government standards in terms of student enrolment, governance, financial sustainability and other aspects. She is confident that TWC will fulfill all requirements for the attainment of university title in two years. She also encouraged students to strive for excellence in their learning journey and become highly capable professionals with broad vision and a sense of commitment to the society.

In his speech, student representative, Mr. Leung Pak-lun, Year 2 student of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physiotherapy programme, thanked donors for their encouragement and the teachers for their dedication to nurturing every student. He said that he would keep this goodwill alive and make contribution to society in the future. He pointed out that TWC is a place with full of opportunities and resources, allowing them to participate in various community services to enhance empathy and accumulate workplace experience through internships. All these experiences will equip them to become outstanding healthcare professionals in the future.
