Biography
Dr. Mabel Yau is currently Assistant Professor of Department of Medical Science of Tung Wah College. She was formerly Scientific Office of Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology of Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  Dr. Yau received her undergraduate training at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and continued her postgraduate studies at the University of Hong Kong, specialized in neuroendocrine, studying the hormonal effects of melatonin in megakaryocytes.  She had her postdoctoral training at University of Toronto for two summers investigating expressions of melatonin receptors in brain after ischemia using animal model.   She has been working on infection control, food safety, HACCP development, and functional foods.  She was invited to be the advisor and demonstrator in a video production on microbiological techniques for secondary school teachers and gave talks on food safety.  She has had over 10 years of experience in microbial examinations of meals for Hotel Nikko and Cathay Pacific Airline and was invited to conduct microbial examination of drinking water and recreational water for her former institute.
 
Dr. Yau had been visiting lecturer of SPACE, University of Hong Kong.  She was a pioneer in web based teaching and learning.  She developed series of e-Learning resources in Biotechnology and pharmaceutical studies, Laboratory Safety as well as studies in animal and human physiology.  Dr. Yau had also been modulator and facilitator of theme based educational summer camps for the secondary school pupils and work-integrated educational projects for university freshmen in biotechnological and science discipline.  She had also been facilitating and organizing study trips for students of Occupational Therapy (OT) and Nursing, providing therapeutic services to residents of elderly homes overseas as well as having collaborations with different non-government organizations and tertiary institutes.   She was awarded ‘Outstanding Performance and Achievement’ by Hong Kong Polytechnic University and ‘Teaching Excellence Award’ by Tung Wah College.
 
Dr. Yau also participates in programme validation and accreditation exercises at work.  Currently she is collaborating with a private hospital in promotions and studies of infection control and is invited reviewer of refereed journals.  Dr. Yau also holds a Master degree in English studies and has publications in the field of Cantonese opera and writer of health related columns.
