Survey Design and

Data Analysis for Research Project

Speaker

Dr. Wong received his Ph.D. in Statistics from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He specialises in developing and administering institutional teaching and learning surveys, generating evidence-based insights to enhance educational practices. Dr. Wong has served as the co‑principal investigator of multiple teaching and learning initiatives. Recent contributions include a peer‑teaching training programme for postgraduate students from non‑statistics backgrounds and an AI‑powered platform providing automated feedback for data‑science assessment tasks. His research interests encompass quantitative methods in educational research and statistics education.

Abstract

Survey research is widely used in applied fields such as business and education because it enables researchers to reach participants efficiently and collect data quickly for timely analysis and decision making. In academic research, survey studies must meet a high standard of methodological rigor and data quality to ensure that the findings are reliable, valid, and generalizable, thereby contributing meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge.

This session provides stepbystep guidance for developing appropriate survey research. It covers how to set clear research objectives, identify the target population, select appropriate sampling strategies, design questionnaires that avoid common flaws, and administer surveys effectively in online environments. The session also introduces techniques for summarizing data, presenting results clearly, and applying essential statistical analyses such as ttests for group comparisons, correlation for examining associations, and regression for assessing predictive relationships.

Participants will gain practical skills that empower them to design and conduct survey research properly and confidently.

Comparing and Contrasting

Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods

Speaker

Dr. CHOI Siu Ming is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Macau. His research focuses on physical literacy and the application of quantitative and qualitative methods to examine how physical education pedagogies (e.g., Sport Education) influence motivation, physical activity, and quality of life across diverse populations.

Abstract

This seminar introduces quantitative and qualitative research as two complementary methodology for generating evidence about social and educational phenomena. It compares their underlying assumptions, research questions, designs, sampling strategies, data sources, analytic techniques, and standards of quality (e.g., validity/reliability and trustworthiness). Participants will learn to identify features that distinguish quantitative approaches that estimate relationships and effects from qualitative approaches that explore meanings, processes, and context. The seminar will explain when each approach is more appropriate, including considerations of feasibility, ethics, and the purpose of inference, and will provide guidance on selecting designs that align methods with questions. Using accessible examples from real-world studies, the session will interpret basic quantitative outputs and qualitative themes, and critically appraise strengths and limitations, including common threats (bias, overgeneralisation, and misuse of statistics) and practices for transparent reporting. The seminar equips students with a practical framework for conducting and interpreting both methodologies.

Beyond Listening to Stories:

Understanding the Nature of Qualitative Research

Speaker

Professor Fiona Tang has been serving at the Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) since 2006. During the years, she has taken on a variety of teaching and administrative roles, including Assistant Programme Director, Chief Year Coordinator, Lecturer Coordinator, and Departmental1564 Coordinator of the United College. Currently, Professor Tang is an Associate Professor (Practice in Nursing) of the School.

Abstract

This seminar will introduce the fundamental nature and philosophical foundations of qualitative research. It will articulate how qualitative research serves as a rigorous and systematic approach to investigating human experiences through in-depth, interpretive inquiry. Participants will examine the constructivist paradigm that underpins qualitative research, recognizing its emphasis on multiple subjective realities shaped by diverse social and cultural contexts. The seminar will distinguish qualitative research from simple storytelling, highlighting its capacity to explore complex phenomena and interconnected human behaviours. Through an exploration of naturalistic and holistic research principles, participants will gain insight into the importance of context in understanding human behaviour. The seminar will also introduce and differentiate common qualitative research designs, while highlighting key principles of qualitative data analysis. By the end of the session, participants will be prepared to appreciate qualitative research as a sophisticated methodology capable of capturing the richness and complexity of human experience.
